The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on 26 June each year, aims to strengthen efforts and collaboration for a world free from drug abuse. This year’s World Drug Day campaign recognizes the importance of basing effective drug policies on science, research, respect for human rights, compassion, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and health impacts of drug use.

Vimukthi is an anti-narcotics campaign launched by the Government of Kerala to emphasize the gravity of the situation and raise awareness, particularly among the youth. It is a collective endeavor aimed at eliminating all forms of narcotic substances from Kerala. On this International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the members of the Vimukti Club at TKMMC pledged to refrain from drug abuse as part of the Government of India's 'Say Yes to Life and No to Drugs' awareness campaign.

 WORLD OCEAN DAY, 2024

Thrikkunnapuzha Beach Cleaning and Awareness Campaign, 08/06/2024

Department of Zoology,  Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India & Ocean Society of India

In connection with World Ocean Day, Department of Zoology, TKMM College, Nangiarkulangara in association with Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India and Ocean Society of India conducted a cleaning drive on Thrikkunnapuzha beach on 08/06/2024.

Thrikkunnapuzha beach  is a narrow black sand belt between the adjacent Alappuzha and Arabian sea subjected to frequent sea erosion and subsequent   natural beach restoration associated with the monsoon and post monsoon phenomena. Another feature of the beach is that huge granite stones were used as erosion preventing bridge at the sea - coast interface. Associated with bridge, perpendicular protrusions- Pulimuttu- are constructed for braking wave action. VAVUBALI, a significant religious ritual (associated with performing rites for the deceased ancestors) is also performed here annually.   The coast is an attractive tourist spot as well, but it is heavily dumped with solid pollutants like plastic bottles, cans, carry bags, wrappers of eatables, tender coconut husks, cigarette butt and even human faecal matter.

It was evident that the beach had been suffering from severe pollution, largely caused by the irresponsible disposal of waste and human defecation. This unhealthy condition not only  posed environmental risks but also raised concerns about the transmission of diseases. So proper cleaning to be done around the beach to have a beautiful and hygienic area and to strengthen the ocean ecosystem.

Dr. Sheela S,  Head of the Zoology Department, extended a warm welcome to all participants The program was inaugurated by Sri. Sudheer T K, Sub Inspector of Police, Thrikkunnapuzha. Sri. S Vinod Kumar, Thrikkunaapuzha Grama Panchayath President, Smt. Jaya P.V, Headmistress, M.U.U.P School, Arattupuzha, Smt. Lanju Satheeshan, Ward Member, Sri. Arun Kumar S, Village Extension Officer, Prof. P Sreemon, former HOD, Dept. of Zoology, T.K.M.M College, Nangiarkulangara, Dr. Jasmine Anand, Assistant Professor ,T.K.M.M College and P Sudheesh Babu, KILA offered felicitation. They conveyed their best wishes and appreciation for the initiative. Zoology Association Secretary, Ms. Parvathi Venugopal expressed vote of thanks. Altogether 70 participants including students, public, Police officers, Coastguards, elected representatives, Haritha Karma Sena, Kudumbasree Unit and  fishermen participated in the cleaning drive.

  WORLD  ENVIRONMENT  DAY CELEBRATIONS

05 JUNE 2024

Department of Zoology & Bio-Diversity Club

In celebration of World Environment Day 2024, The Department of Zoology in collaboration with Bio-Diversity Club, undertook a significant initiative to promote environmental conservation and biodiversity on 5th June 2024. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sharmila P.P, former Principal, TKMM College, Nangiarkulangara in the presence of Dr. Rajeev S.R (Principal-in -Charge), teachers and students from all departments.  The event focused on two primary activities: the eradication of invasive plant species already identified in the campus during our National workshop on Invasive Species - Monitoring and Management   and the planting of native trees across the campus.

The event commenced with a briefing session on impact of invasive plants on local ecosystems. It highlighted how these plants outcompete native species, reduce biodiversity, and alter habitats. Armed with gloves and gardening tools, participants, including students and faculty divided into teams to manually remove invasive plants from designated areas on the campus. This hands-on activity was both educational and productive, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship.

Following the removal of invasive species, the focus shifted to restoring the campus greenery. Native tree saplings, chosen for their ecological benefits and suitability to the local climate, were planted. Instructions on proper planting techniques and aftercare were provided to ensure the healthy growth of the trees. The event saw enthusiastic participation from the entire family of Department of Zoology. They  volunteered and eager to contribute to the environment and gain practical experience..

Outcomes:

·         Environmental Impact: considerable number of invasive plants were successfully removed, making way for native flora to thrive. Additionally,  native trees were planted, contributing to the campus’s biodiversity and providing future benefits such as shade, carbon sequestration, and habitat for wildlife.

·         Educational Value: Participants gained hands-on experience in ecological management and tree planting, enhancing their knowledge and commitment to environmental sustainability.

·         Community Building: The event fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility among participants, strengthening the campus’s environmental network and laying the groundwork for future initiatives.

The Environment Day celebration was a resounding success, achieving its dual goals of eradicating invasive plants and promoting tree planting. The collective effort of students and faculty not only improved the campus environment but also instilled a lasting appreciation for ecological conservation. Moving forward, the campus plans to monitor the growth of the newly planted trees and continue efforts to maintain biodiversity and environmental health.
