Unleash Your Hand's True Eloquence: Handwriting Competition for First-Year Students

In an era dominated by keyboards and touchscreens, the timeless art of penmanship took center stage at T.K. Madhava Memorial College. On July 10, 2026, at 1:30 PM, the Department of English hosted a captivating Handwriting Competition exclusively for first-year undergraduate students.

The event aimed to celebrate the beauty of written text and encourage newcomers to take pride in their unique styles under the inspiring theme, "Unleash Your Hand's True Eloquence!"

The classroom was filled with focused silence as enthusiastic first-years put pen to paper. The rules were simple yet demanding, designed to test the ultimate precision of the students:

Participants were given a standard, unruled A4 sheet.

A strict time limit of 30 minutes was enforced to transcribe the official passage completely.

Writers had the choice between consistent Cursive or Print scripts using only blue or black ink.

The ultimate test? No rulers or pencils were permitted for guidelines—forcing participants to rely entirely on their natural ability to maintain straight lines and uniform margins.

The Team Behind the Initiative

The smooth execution of the competition was managed by a dedicated organizing committee from the English Department, including:

Prioritizing Student Well-Being: 'Jeevani' Organizes Mental Health Awareness Session for First-Year English Students

Stepping into higher education brings exciting opportunities, but it also marks a significant period of personal and academic transition. To ensure its newest students are well-equipped to navigate this journey with resilience, Jeevani, the college’s dedicated student counseling and wellness cell, organized a specialized mental health awareness and interactive session specifically for the first-year students of the Department of English. The session took place on July 9, 2026, at 10:50 AM, introducing the freshers to the extensive emotional and psychological support systems available to them right on campus.

The Jeevani Counseling Cell—a vital initiative focused on the holistic well-being of the student community—led the session to break the stigma surrounding mental health and emphasize that emotional strength is just as crucial as academic performance.

During the interactive hour, the session focused on:

Navigating Transitions: Understanding the shift from school life to a college environment.

Stress & Anxiety Management: Identifying early signs of academic pressure and healthy coping mechanisms.

Utilizing Campus Support: Highlighting the presence of a safe, strictly confidential, and professional space on campus where students can seek guidance without judgment.

The first-year English students engaged warmly in the dialogue, discussing their expectations, challenges, and aspirations for their undergraduate years. By bringing this initiative directly into the department's classroom, Jeevani successfully reminded the students that they are never alone in their struggles and that the institution values their peace of mind just as much as their degrees.

Outreach Programme (Dept. of Zoology) on "Microplastics – A Growing Environmental Concern" (Awareness program)

As part of the extension and outreach initiatives of T. K. Madhava Memorial College, Nangiarkulangara, the Department of Zoology, actively participated in an environmental awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School, Mangalam on 4 July 2026. The outreach activity aimed to extend scientific knowledge beyond the college campus by creating awareness among school students and the local community on the growing environmental challenge posed by microplastic pollution.

The programme was organized in association with the Alappuzha Kerala Photographers Association (AKPA), Karthikappally Unit, under the theme "Microplastics – A Growing Environmental Concern." The initiative reflected the college's commitment to community engagement, environmental education, and sustainable development through meaningful extension activities.

The awareness session was conducted by Dr. Jasmine Anand, Head, Department of Zoology, T. K. Madhava Memorial College, who served as the resource person. During the session, Dr. Jasmine Anand explained the sources, formation, and widespread occurrence of microplastics in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. She discussed how plastic waste degrades into microscopic particles that contaminate soil, rivers, estuaries, oceans, seafood, drinking water, and even the human food chain.

Special emphasis was given to the vulnerability of coastal ecosystems and fishing communities, as Government Higher Secondary School, Mangalam serves students from a coastal region where livelihoods are closely linked to the marine environment. The session highlighted the impacts of plastic pollution on marine biodiversity, fisheries, sea turtles, seabirds, and human health. Students were encouraged to understand their role in protecting coastal resources through responsible waste management, reduction of single-use plastics, recycling, and active participation in environmental conservation programmes.

The programme was highly interactive, with students and participants enthusiastically engaging in discussions on plastic waste management, environmental sustainability, and individual responsibilities in conserving nature. Practical measures to minimize plastic consumption and promote eco-friendly alternatives were also demonstrated. Nearly 75 students participated in the program.

The outreach programme reflects the vision of T. K. Madhava Memorial College in promoting extension activities that directly benefit society. By reaching out to schools in coastal communities, the college strives to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and community needs, fostering environmental awareness among young learners who are future custodians of the coastal ecosystem.

The programme also strengthened the collaboration between the college, local educational institutions, and community organizations, thereby enhancing the social responsibility initiatives of the Department of Zoology. Such extension activities enable faculty members to disseminate scientific knowledge to society while inspiring students to become environmentally conscious citizens.

The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which participants expressed keen interest in learning more about marine pollution and biodiversity conservation. The organizers appreciated the valuable contribution of Dr. Jasmine Anand in making the session informative and inspiring.

This outreach initiative successfully fulfilled the objectives of environmental education and community engagement, reaffirming the commitment of T. K. Madhava Memorial College and its faculty to serving society through knowledge sharing, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.

Dream and Design Your Website: A Hands-On Workshop at TKMMC

On July 3, 2026, the PG Department of Commerce, in collaboration with GTECH Computer Education, Haripad, successfully hosted an interactive, hands-on workshop titled "Dream and Design Your Website." Held in the college Computer Lab, the session was designed to empower both students and faculty with the practical skills needed to build a professional online presence without any prior coding experience.

The primary goal of the workshop was captured perfectly by its motto: "Walk in with an idea. Walk out with a live website." Utilizing the Weebly platform, the session focused on a "no coding required" approach, making web design accessible to participants from all academic backgrounds. The instructor led the group through live demonstrations—projected on the main screen—while attendees followed along on their individual workstations.

Key concepts covered during the session included:

  • Drag & Drop Mechanics: Understanding the intuitive interface for placing website elements.

  • Page Structuring: Creating and organizing multiple pages for seamless navigation.

  • Media Integration: Effectively embedding images and multimedia to enhance visual appeal.

  • Form Creation: Building functional contact and inquiry forms.

  • Publishing: The final steps to take a website live on the internet.

The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from both students and faculty members. The provided photographs from the session demonstrate a highly engaged audience working attentively at their terminals. Under the guidance of the resource person, participants experimented with various templates—such as food and bakery themes—learning how to customize text, adjust layouts, and build a cohesive brand identity in real-time.

By the end of the workshop, attendees successfully translated their initial concepts into functioning, live websites, gaining a highly valuable and marketable digital skill.

The "Dream and Design Your Website" session was a resounding success, successfully bridging the gap between creative ideas and digital execution. By equipping our college community with the tools to build their own digital platforms, this initiative represents a significant step forward in fostering digital literacy and practical technical skills on campus.
