Collaborative Research - Field vist @ Thane Creek
Dr Jasmine Anand
Department of Zoology
The
collaborative research project on migratory shorebirds led by Dr. Jasmine
Anand, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, involved extensive fieldwork
conducted at Thane Creek, India, from October 19 to November 1, 2023. The team
comprised researchers from various institutions, including Dr. Rubeena from
King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia, along with research scholars Ms. Shifa, Ms.
Athira, and Mr. Jishnu (Calicut University). The primary objective of the
fieldwork was to assess species diversity among migratory shorebirds.
Thane
Creek, located near Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, was chosen as the primary study
area due to its significance as a wintering ground for migratory shorebirds.
The
objectives of the fieldwork were to:
Assess
species diversity among migratory shorebirds.
Collect
samples to understand environmental contaminants in the area.
The
collaboration between researchers from different institutions facilitated a
comprehensive approach to data collection and analysis, leveraging diverse
expertise and resources. Dr. Rubeena and her team contributed valuable insights
and expertise from their experience in similar research conducted in different
geographical regions.
Research
scholars Ms. Shifa, Ms. Athira, and Mr. Jishnu played integral roles in field
data collection, sample processing, and logistical support.
Preliminary
analysis indicates a rich diversity of migratory shorebirds and other avian
species inhabiting the Thane Creek area during the study period. The fieldwork
conducted at Thane Creek represents a significant step towards understanding
species diversity among migratory shorebirds and assessing environmental
contaminants in the area. The collaborative efforts of researchers from
different institutions have contributed valuable data and insights, laying the
groundwork for future research and conservation initiatives aimed at protecting
these vital ecosystems.
