കേരളം - ഗണിത ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭൂമിക ORGANIZED BY DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AS PART OF KERALA PIRAVI CELEBRATIONS, 2025

As part of the Keralappiravi celebrations, the Department of Mathematics conducted a program titled “

കേരളം - ഗണിത ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭൂമിക ” The event featured PowerPoint presentations by first-year Mathematics students Sivani S, Karthik V Krishna, and Fathima K.H highlighting Kerala’s rich mathematical legacy.

The program began with a warm welcome by the Head of the Department Smt. Sinumol S, followed by the formal inauguration by the Principal Dr. S Venu.  He briefly explained why the early works of Mathematics were written in Sanskrit and presented in the form of slokas. He also emphasized that Mathematics forms the foundation of all sciences, as well as language — represented through syllables like ka, pa, da, ya, mi — and many other disciplines. The students made an extensive and informative presentation on the legendary mathematicians of Kerala such as Sangamagrama Madhava, Brahmagupta, Neelakanda Somayaji, Parameshwaran Namboothiri, Kesav Menon, and George Geevarghese Joseph. Their presentations covered details such as the mathematicians’ life period, place of birth, and major contributions to the world of Mathematics.

The presentations also discussed notable works such as Tantrasamgraha, Yuktibhasha, Venvaram, and many others. They inspired the audience by highlighting the great contributions of Kerala mathematicians in the field of Mathematics, especially in calculus. It was highlighted that as early as the 14th century, Madhava had developed concepts foundational to calculus, trigonometry, infinite series, and more — long before Newton and Leibniz.

The students worked with great enthusiasm and dedication to make their presentations successful, and the event was a valuable learning experience for them as well. Many expressed their interest in exploring the topic further, even considering research opportunities in this field. The audience actively participated in the session, and towards the end, the coordinator conducted a short interactive quiz based on the presentations and those who answered correctly received a small token of appreciation — a pen. The Principal appreciated the department for organizing such a meaningful program that highlighted Kerala’s mathematical legends on this special occasion. Sri . M. K. Sreenivasan felicitated the program, and the event was attended by the faculty members of the department Smt. Renjini S & Dr. Dhanya Shajin. Malayalam faculty members  Smt. Bindu V. K and Sri. Abhilash Y., and Hindi faculty member Dr. Silpa Sivan were also attended the program. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by the coordinator Smt. Sinumol S.

Overall, the program was highly informative and met its objectives successfully, celebrating both Keralappiravi and Kerala’s glorious contributions to the world of Mathematics.
