  WORLD  ENVIRONMENT  DAY CELEBRATIONS

05 JUNE 2024

Department of Zoology & Bio-Diversity Club

In celebration of World Environment Day 2024, The Department of Zoology in collaboration with Bio-Diversity Club, undertook a significant initiative to promote environmental conservation and biodiversity on 5th June 2024. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sharmila P.P, former Principal, TKMM College, Nangiarkulangara in the presence of Dr. Rajeev S.R (Principal-in -Charge), teachers and students from all departments.  The event focused on two primary activities: the eradication of invasive plant species already identified in the campus during our National workshop on Invasive Species - Monitoring and Management   and the planting of native trees across the campus.

The event commenced with a briefing session on impact of invasive plants on local ecosystems. It highlighted how these plants outcompete native species, reduce biodiversity, and alter habitats. Armed with gloves and gardening tools, participants, including students and faculty divided into teams to manually remove invasive plants from designated areas on the campus. This hands-on activity was both educational and productive, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship.

Following the removal of invasive species, the focus shifted to restoring the campus greenery. Native tree saplings, chosen for their ecological benefits and suitability to the local climate, were planted. Instructions on proper planting techniques and aftercare were provided to ensure the healthy growth of the trees. The event saw enthusiastic participation from the entire family of Department of Zoology. They  volunteered and eager to contribute to the environment and gain practical experience..

Outcomes:

·         Environmental Impact: considerable number of invasive plants were successfully removed, making way for native flora to thrive. Additionally,  native trees were planted, contributing to the campus’s biodiversity and providing future benefits such as shade, carbon sequestration, and habitat for wildlife.

·         Educational Value: Participants gained hands-on experience in ecological management and tree planting, enhancing their knowledge and commitment to environmental sustainability.

·         Community Building: The event fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility among participants, strengthening the campus’s environmental network and laying the groundwork for future initiatives.

The Environment Day celebration was a resounding success, achieving its dual goals of eradicating invasive plants and promoting tree planting. The collective effort of students and faculty not only improved the campus environment but also instilled a lasting appreciation for ecological conservation. Moving forward, the campus plans to monitor the growth of the newly planted trees and continue efforts to maintain biodiversity and environmental health.

Collaborative Research - Sampling @ Mavoor Wetland

Dr Jasmine Anand

Department of Zoology

Dr. Jasmine Anand, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, as a part of her collaborative research project on wetland waterbirds, has undergone extensive fieldwork at Mavoor wetland, Kozhikode, Kerala, on August 12 and 13, 2023. The team comprised researchers from various institutions, including Dr. Rubeena, along with research scholars Ms. Shifa, Ms. Athira, and Mr. Jishnu (Calicut University). The primary objective of the fieldwork was to assess the breeding diversity of waterbirds.

Mavoor wetland along with the adjoining areas was chosen as the primary study area due to its significant abundance of waterbirds.

The objectives of the fieldwork were to:

Assess the diversity of breeding waterbirds in Mavoor wetland.

Study the food preference of waterbirds

Preliminary analysis indicates Mavoor wetland is a key breeding ground for large wading birds like Darters, Cormorants, Purple herons Egrets etc.

Collaborative Research - Field vist @ Thane Creek

Dr Jasmine Anand

Department of Zoology

The collaborative research project on migratory shorebirds led by Dr. Jasmine Anand, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, involved extensive fieldwork conducted at Thane Creek, India, from October 19 to November 1, 2023. The team comprised researchers from various institutions, including Dr. Rubeena from King Fahd University, Saudi Arabia, along with research scholars Ms. Shifa, Ms. Athira, and Mr. Jishnu (Calicut University). The primary objective of the fieldwork was to assess species diversity among migratory shorebirds.

Thane Creek, located near Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, was chosen as the primary study area due to its significance as a wintering ground for migratory shorebirds.

The objectives of the fieldwork were to:

Assess species diversity among migratory shorebirds.

Collect samples to understand environmental contaminants in the area.

Extensive sampling was conducted along the entire Thane Creek area and the adjacent saltpan region. Visual surveys and observational data were collected to identify and document various migratory shorebird species. Samples were collected from different locations for analysis, following standard protocols to ensure accuracy and consistency.

The collaboration between researchers from different institutions facilitated a comprehensive approach to data collection and analysis, leveraging diverse expertise and resources. Dr. Rubeena and her team contributed valuable insights and expertise from their experience in similar research conducted in different geographical regions.

Research scholars Ms. Shifa, Ms. Athira, and Mr. Jishnu played integral roles in field data collection, sample processing, and logistical support.

Preliminary analysis indicates a rich diversity of migratory shorebirds and other avian species inhabiting the Thane Creek area during the study period. The fieldwork conducted at Thane Creek represents a significant step towards understanding species diversity among migratory shorebirds and assessing environmental contaminants in the area. The collaborative efforts of researchers from different institutions have contributed valuable data and insights, laying the groundwork for future research and conservation initiatives aimed at protecting these vital ecosystems.
