Swatchata Pakhwada Campaign

NSS-TKMMC in association with Southern Railways (28

September 2023)

The collaboration between the NSS unit of the college and the Southern Railway's Haripad station for a one-day cleaning program, as part of the Swatchata Pakhwada campaign, exemplified the spirit of community engagement and social responsibility. This event, which took place on Thursday, 28th September 2023, was part of the larger initiative by the Indian Railway to promote hygiene and cleanliness in trains and railway stations, echoing the slogan "Swatch Train, Swatch Bharath."

Swatchata Pakhwada holds particular significance as it coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. The two-week-long program, which commenced on 15th September, culminates on Gandhi Jayanthi day, October 2nd. The participants began the day's activities by reciting a pledge, emphasizing the importance of preserving and conserving railway stations and trains. The pledge underscored the commitment to maintaining cleanliness, avoiding littering, and ensuring that railway premises remain plastic-free.

The Station Superintendent, Mr. Gractious Sudarshan, led the recitation of the pledge, which was echoed by both NSS volunteers and railway station staff. Following this, an awareness rally was organized on the station platforms. The primary aim was to educate commuters about their responsibilities in maintaining cleanliness while in railway stations, on platforms, and during their train journeys.

Approximately 40 volunteers actively participated in the day-long cleaning campaign in and around Haripad railway station. Their collective efforts were not only dedicated but also visible, evident in the transformation of the station's front garden and premises. The cleaning campaign left a lasting impact, with the station area now completely cleaned and cleared of litter.

As a testament to the commitment to environmental sustainability, the program concluded with the planting of 50 fruit saplings in the vicinity of the railway station and front garden. This act not only enhances the station's aesthetics but also contributes to the local ecosystem, promoting greenery and biodiversity.

Key individuals, such as Railway Health Inspector Smt. Dhanya and NSS Programme Officers Dr. Sreejith Krishnan and Sri Sanoop Sivaraman, played vital roles in guiding and coordinating the program. Their dedication and leadership ensured the successful execution of the cleaning campaign and awareness initiatives.

In summary, this collaborative effort between the college's NSS unit and the Southern Railway's Haripad station illustrated the power of community engagement in promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and environmental sustainability. Through such initiatives, the participants not only contribute to the immediate surroundings but also inspire others to take up similar initiatives, fostering a culture of cleanliness and social responsibility.
