The Department of Mathematics celebrated Pi Approximation Day on 25th July 2025 at 1:15 PM in the college seminar hall. The event was formally inaugurated by the Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Rajeev S.R, who highlighted the significance of mathematical constants, their origins, and their relevance in the study of science and technology.
Pi
Approximation Day is observed annually on July 22, representing the fraction
22/7, a widely recognized rational approximation of the mathematical constant π
(Pi). To mark this occasion, the department conducted a vibrant program titled
"Pi Day Fiesta", which included a presentation by Ms. Sandra L, a
first-semester B.Sc. Mathematics student. She delivered an insightful talk on
the topic “Pi – The Irrational Star of the Math World”.
The
presentation explored various facets of Pi, including the origin and history of
Pi, fascinating facts surrounding this irrational number, its applications in
real life, fun trivia and puzzles related to Pi, and the reasons behind the
global celebration of Pi Day.
The
program was fully coordinated by the first-year Mathematics students,
showcasing their organizational capabilities and leadership skills. Their
active involvement in planning and executing the event was deeply appreciated
by the faculty and the audience.
The program began with a solemn prayer led by Athulya
Santhosh and Amrutha Sajeev, third-semester
B.Sc. Mathematics students. Following the prayer, the event commenced with a welcome address by the Head of
the Department, Smt. Sinumol S, who applauded the students for their enthusiasm
and initiative. The presence of faculty members from various departments added
to the charm of the event. Attendees included Smt. Renjini S, Dr. Dhanya Shajin,
and Sri. M.K Sreenivasan from the Department of Mathematics, Sri. Sivaprasad
P.S from the Department of Statistics, Smt. Saranya Babu from the Department of
Physics, Smt. Remya V.R. from the Department of English, Smt. Divya P Bhadran
from the Department of Commerce and Sri. Abhilash Y from the Department of
Malayalam.
The
program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Parvathy Madhu, a third-semester Mathematics student,
who expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries, faculty members, and student
coordinators for making the celebration a grand success.
The
event served not only as a tribute to the beauty of mathematics but also as an
excellent platform for students to develop their skills in public speaking,
event management, and academic presentation.
