Sparking Environmental Awareness: Department of English Leads World Environment Day 2026

In celebration of World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, the Department of English at T. K. Madhava Memorial College, Nangiarkulangara, took proactive steps to engage students in eco-conscious thinking. By partnering with the college's student clubs, the department successfully hosted two engaging campus-wide events designed to inspire change and test environmental knowledge.

1. Online Environmental Quiz: "Test Your Knowledge. Inspire Change."

To kick off the celebrations, the Department of English collaborated with the Reading Club to host an interactive Online Quiz.

  • The Theme: Operating under the powerful banner of "Our Planet. Our Responsibility. Our Future," the quiz challenged students to assess their understanding of global environmental issues.

  • The Goal: The event aimed to prove that a "small step today for you [can be] a big change for our planet." By making the quiz open to all students, the organizers ensured a broad reach, encouraging participants from all disciplines to reflect on their environmental footprint.

The initiative encouraged students to think about various aspects of environmental protection and sustainability. By combining learning with an interactive quiz format, the programme sought to make environmental education interesting and accessible to students. It also helped promote awareness about the urgent need for eco-conscious attitudes and responsible citizenship. 15 students participated in the competition.
  • The enthusiastic participation of students contributed to the success of the programme. The Online Quiz served not only as a knowledge-based activity but also as a meaningful reminder that individual and collective efforts are essential for creating a cleaner, greener and healthier future.

  • The Challenge: Students were provided with a picture on the spot and tasked with crafting an original, creative, and meaningful English caption within a strict 10–15 word limit.

  • The Message: The contest was driven by the inspiring quotes "One Earth. One Chance. Let your words make a difference" and "Let your words inspire a greener tomorrow." * The Outcome: The competition not only tested the students' linguistic skills but also their ability to distill complex environmental messages into powerful, bite-sized calls to action.

Through these intellectually stimulating and creative events, the Department of English at T. K. Madhava Memorial College successfully transformed World Environment Day from a simple observance into an active platform for student engagement. By challenging students to both know better and speak louder for the planet, the college continues to foster a community of environmentally responsible citizens.

The contest was open to all students of the college. As part of the activity, participants were provided with a picture on the spot and were asked to create an original and meaningful caption in English. The captions were limited to 10–15 words, thereby encouraging students to communicate their ideas concisely and effectively. 9 students participated in the competition.

The competition provided students with an opportunity to combine creativity, language skills and environmental awareness. Through their captions, the participants reflected on the importance of protecting nature, conserving the environment and creating a sustainable future. The activity also promoted the effective use of language in a short and impactful form.

The entries were evaluated on the basis of their creativity, originality, relevance and meaningful expression. The decisions of the judges were final. The contest created an engaging platform for students to demonstrate their writing abilities while responding thoughtfully to an important environmental concern.

The programme successfully highlighted the message of World Environment Day and reinforced the idea that even a few carefully chosen words can create awareness and inspire positive action. The event concluded with appreciation for the enthusiastic participation of the students and the collaborative efforts of the Department of English and the Communication Skill Development Club. Agraj U of I BA English , Ankitha Sreeraman of II English and Krishnapriya A. of I MSc Physics won the I, II and III Prizes respectively.
