March 2024
Pi
Day is celebrated on 14 March every year
as an ode to the most well-known approximation (3.14) of the mathematical
constant pi (π), which is denoted by the Greek letter pi. Pi is an important concept that appears in all aspects of
maths. It is a crucial concept that helps to understand the universal truths
and some mathematical concepts. Mostly pi values are used in concepts like
trigonometry, geometry and advanced concepts like probability, statistics, and
complex numbers. The notation to denote pi is π . If you ask any scientist about pi, they
will tell that the value of pi equal to the decimal value 3.14159. But when you
ask a mathematician, they will tell that pi is a value which is equal to circle
circumference divided by the circle diameter. It is a well-recognized
mathematical constant used all over the world.
In connection with Pi day, Mathematics Department in association with Science club conducted a Talk on “Amazing Mathematics”. 56 students from different departments of our college participated in this programme.
The
program started at 10.30 am with a prayer by Department choir. Dr. Dhanya
Shajin, Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Mathematics delivered the
Welcome speech and Smt. Renjini S., H.O.D of Mathematics delivered the Presidential
address. Dr. Sharmila P. P.,The Principal inaugurated the program .Dr. Arun S.
Prasad HOD department of Physics and Dr. Divya Dinesh, Assistant Professor of
Chemistry felicitated the function.
Dr.
Pravas K., Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam,
presented a power point presentation on the ‘Amazing Mathematics’. He presented
various simple arithmetic problems then leads to one of the most famous
unsolved problem in mathematics, collatz conjecture.
The
program ended with the vote of thanks by third student Ms. Adhenna Vijay.
